Myofascial cupping

Massage

Myofascial cupping can be a standalone massage treatment or be incorporated into therapeutic and remedial massage treatments. Cupping is a negative pressure massage unlike other forms of massage which are positive pressure massage.

Cupping is a good option for people who don’t like the feel of pressure and the associated pain when working on or around trigger points (Knots). Myofascial Cupping is a technique where pressurised cups are slid over lubricated skin. The negative pressure in the cups encourages blood flow into surrounding muscles, skin and other connective tissue this in turn releases toxins from the muscles, increases oxygenation and promotes faster healing.

Myofascial cupping can be static (the cups remain in place) or dynamic (the cups are slid along areas of muscle or tissue tension). When the cups are left in place, they cause round bruising patterns. When the cups are slid along the muscles, they can often cause a red gravel rash-type appearance on the skin. The result can lead to a generalised reddening of the skin to full bruising. This outcome is dependent on the amount of pressure used within the cups, the tension within the tissue fibers worked on, and the sensitivity of the client’s skin. Markings can last from as little time as a minute or up to a week.

If you are taking blood thinning medication, it is essential that you let your therapist know. Specific medications can be a contraindication of cupping as it can increase the chance of a hematoma to form.

As with all massages, it is recommended to be fully hydrated before your treatment and to continue drinking plenty of water after the treatment.
